'Spending time in the incredible Johnstons of Elgin Archive, I was immediately struck by the vivid and exceptional boldness of so much of the historical output, not just the staggering colour combinations of clan tartans but also the fashion fabrics that we looked at from the 20s, 30s and 50s. We drew inspiration from these in developing a bold range of coloured plaids and checks.'- Ben Pentreath
Having been approached by the Johnstons of Elgin design team to work on a collaboration, Ben spent roughly two and a half years, drawing inspiration from a 1940’s dye shade book discovered in the company’s archives, developing a focused collection of lambswool interior fabrics, made up of approximately 20 different colourways and pattern combinations, and in September of 2022 their joint collection was launched.
Johnstons of Elgin is considered one of Scotland's oldest brands, founded in 1797, making it over 225 years old. Specialising in fine cashmere and woollen fabrics the company has been in continuous operation for all this time and is one of the last remaining vertical mills in the UK, handling raw materials through to finished products.
The company holds multiple Royal Warrants and has been supplying the Royal Family since 1853, when Prince Albert commissioned them to weave the first Balmoral tweed.
